About1.tif

“When I was a junior in high school, I had interest in being more involved in science research. Being in a stem-oriented school, I was surprised by how much difficulty I had just with learning about the resources to get started. I reached out to my teachers first: Mr. Thomas and Mr. Econome, and both pointed me in the right direction. It was actually working with Mr. Thomas in the Regeneron research class where I learned about the discontinued past publication Sigma. And as I got more involved in my own projects, I began to work with Mr. Econome and Mr. Thomas through ideas of developing a research platform to continue to support future students and their research.”

“STAR was a name than Benedict Ho came up with. It stands for Science, Technology and Research. It began mainly to focus on publishing student research and writing to allow the student and school population to be more aware of the research opportunities that are available. This publication is Sigma, continuing with the name from the past publications. Then, the club grew over the years and we began to cover more base by not just publishing student research work, but also holding weekly meetings to train basic science lab skills, talk about science papers, etc.”

“I learned about Sigma from Mr. Thomas who showed me a past publication. I was interested in making these resources more available to students, and he supported me and the club during the early years.”
